Statements from Noia Board Chair and CEO on the Passing of Mr. John C. Crosbie

Issued January 10, 2020 by Noia

“It is with profound sadness and sorrow that Noia members, the offshore oil and gas industry, and indeed our country, learn of the passing of Mr. John C. Crosbie.

Mr. Crosbie leaves behind an enduring legacy as a well respected provincial and federal politician and unwavering champion of the offshore oil and gas industry of Newfoundland and Labrador and Canada.  An architect of the industry, Mr. Crosbie’s leadership was instrumental in the establishment of the 1985 Atlantic Accord and the Hibernia Project. To honour his achievements and dedication to the industry, Noia was proud to recognize Mr. Crosbie as one of the inaugural recipients of its Outstanding Contribution Award during its 25th anniversary celebrations in 2002.

On behalf of Noia, I wish to extend sincere and heartfelt condolences to Mr. Crosbie’s wide circle of family and friends, in particular to his beloved wife Jane and children Ches, Michael, Beth and their families, on the loss of this extraordinary individual.”

-- Mark Collett, Noia Board of Directors Chair

“It was Mr. Crosbie’s vision and entrepreneurial mind that secured Newfoundland and Labrador’s first offshore oil and gas project, Hibernia. During his tenure as a federal minister, Mr. Crosbie convinced then Prime Minister Brian Mulroney to invest in the project by taking on an 8.5 per cent stake, thus allowing the project to proceed when it appeared to be over before it began. Without this investment, Hibernia would not have been developed and the province would not have established the thriving oil and gas industry present today.”

Mr. Crosbie will be forever remembered for his outstanding commitment to our province and tireless work to improve the lives of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. Our industry is indebted to his belief, passion, and determination.”
