Did You Know?
Rising 224 metres from the seabed, the Hibernia platform tips the scales at 1.2 million tons and is believed to be the biggest known object ever towed. Time Magazine dubbed it as "the eighth wonder of the modern world".
Each year, hundreds of icebergs drift offshore Newfoundland & Labrador. Oil & gas companies have an extensive iceberg-management program to detect icebergs and track their movement. If necessary, an iceberg can be "lassoed" with a cable or net to change its direction, or water cannons can be used to nudge it to a different course.
Newfoundland & Labrador's oil & gas industry is considered world-class and is home to offices of several multi-national oil & gas and supply and service companies. When White Rose began production, it, along with Hibernia and Terra Nova, produces approximately 400,000 bbls/day; representing almost 50% of Canada's conventional light crude oil production.
The Guinness Book of World Records calls the Grand Banks the foggiest place on earth; 40% fog coverage in winter and up to 84% in some summer months. It is home to the Hibernia, Terra Nova and White Rose fields.
